Art is life, and therefore it is limitless.
Cafe experience has been the central fabric of life in the European society ever since it first appeared in the midst of the 17th century. It stands as a focal point where the meeting of fellow parties take place, allowing men to satisfy their cravings of sweet engagements with family, friends, and lovers at a more casual setting, rather than meeting up at a fancy restaurant with certain etiquettes and dress codes that require them to fulfil.
From then onwards, the laid-back concept cafés provide, have been receiving countless positive responses from fellow patrons, and since then Cafe Culture is seen as a significant component in running the modern society.
With it’s popularity sky rocketing Cafe Franchises have begun to emerge around the capitol, my review today has landed on my all time favourite sunday brunch cafe in Kemang: where i spend numerous insignificant moments just chillin my ass on a lazy sunday morning, while having a plate of ala Kiwis home-cooked breakfast.
And the place is none other than the Antipodean Cafe.
It had been a regular place i used to visit as a kid and is still one of my favourites till today. Since I was young I had always been infatuated with the name Antipodean. I thought it was some sort of creative made-up name to begin with. However to my surprise recently i discover that it actually is a real word, it is even written in the Dictionary…And so of course my curious mind began to explore the origins of the chosen name just like what i did with Pipiltin Cocoa.
And here’s a little backdrop on the story behind the opt for ‘Antipodean’ as a tag:
Antipodean is commonly used to informally address Australians. Yet its initial meaning actually refers to regions that are situated diametrically opposite to one another on the earth’s surface. And well since Australia (well not exactly) is the antipodes of UK, it ended up justifying the logic behind the calling. So asides from their geographical location, i assumed that the name ‘Antipodean Cafe’ also has something to do with the spread of cafe cultures by European immigrants who migrated across the continent due to the post horror of world war II. They soon perceive that their cafe rave was nowhere to be found on their newly settled land! And the idea of evangelising the Cafe culture gained many supporters thus it began traveling fast all across the regions, which began to showcase the bewitching influence of cafe experience in the society even towards the exterior shell of Europe.
In which the basis behind Antipodean Cafe’s establishment here in Jakarta is to expand cafe experience all across the globe, by preserving the authenticity of the original cafe experience. Antipodean Cafe takes its very soul from the cafes that have gone before it, not only in the Kiwi land, but also in Europe by becoming the focal point connecting locales and expatriates simply under a cup of distinct aromatic house brew coffee and the ranges of luscious all day breakfast solution.
Just like how cafe culture was introduced for the first time to the antipodes, antipodean cafe strives to expand the local influence it has back home and introduce their koala chefs’ renown recipes to the Indonesians.
The cafe itself is a perfect depiction of a cosy, unpretentious home kitchen. Walking in through the entrance door we can immediately see the entire confines of this tiny little cafe from a cusp of an eye to the other end while doing a 180 degree flick. Dark oak coloured wooden chairs and 8 square-tables cover the entire space behind the kitchen bar along with a touch of vibrant purple burst placed on top of each table; complementing the ‘supposedly’ dull vibes.
the bijou scale of the interior can be a mind boggling challenge on making use of every corner to its maximum advantage. Yet the cramped area of the cafe, was never a barrier to prevent creativity from exploring to it’s utmost potential! Down below you can see how they had turned one side of the wall into a humongous black chalkboard along with the listed written menu divided into three sections: Drinks, Breakfast and Lunch. ( beware! No handbook menu provided, better take your specs with you since it will be extremely awkward if you keep squinting and enlarging your eyes just to be able to read the menu x_x->of course to the guests sitting beside the wall)
The black and red walls. (unseen due to my grayscale photography)
I see that they’re trying to enhance the shady ambience of the dark walls X dark furniture by adding a resonant combination of red. I personally don’t think the contrast colours work out that well, I prefer a more neutral colour…hmm maybe white? As the perfect match to the dim surrounding.Though credit is still given for creating the lively and spirited ambiance! 😀
Moving on to the…. Does anyone notice those beautiful TURKISH Tiles?! I really really really Adore their pick of tiles! Looking at the detailed patterns, it’s just so eye catching and very artsy. I can’t help but stare at it with both eyes soaking in admiration. (please don’t mind my tendency on being too overly captivated by something….and yes the floor pretty much sums up the whole interior as one hybrid design in merging minimalist styles with a hint of classic-traditional ornament to create the ideal warm comfy yet sophisticated place that we may call home.
Antipodean Cafe uses local beans from Indonesia under the brand MERDEKA. They have ranges of bean choices available for purchase (Originating from Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi and etc. all with different acidity levels and bitterness values according to the soil type, altitude, processing method, and the aging time).
Many claimed that Antipodean cafe serves one of the best yum cup of coffee in town (In Reference to Tripadvisor) And I myself as a fan of caffeine just couldn’t agree more! It has a balance weight in terms of flavour and gives a long lasting finish to the mouth. And of course the rare distinct taste can only be achieved by the use of local beans:)
And we finally arrive to the savoury all day breakfast that they offer there in the house, I just love the way they present it as if there is no prohibition on eating breakfast at any time circumstances like many others are doing these days in order to create an extensive menu of their own. Both the Croissant scrambled egg w/ sausage and french toast w/ berry compote are under the breakfast menu.
The french toast is no doubt my all time favourite: generous in size, the combination of a slight crisp on the outer layer and an extremely fluffy inside layer, work out really well for me along with the zest of fresh unsweetened raspberry compote at the side. This is what I always order whenever me and my Pop decide to avoid my mom’s cooking for a lil western style brunch.
The croissant scrambled egg with sausage is also something to try here: the scrambled egg has an addictive ‘just right’ creamy texture of butter and milk fused into the mixture. Eggs are always cooked freshly in this open kitchen, along with the fresh veges who always manage to win the heart of customers…Well it would be shameful if they served ugly vegetable since they’ve got one big ass supermarket as their neighbour xP
Lastly ordered was the open shredded chicken sandwich: see the overindulgent amount of ranch dressing they placed on top of my open sandwich? This would be a huge jackpot for those who LOVE Mayonnaise, but Nay for me! Honestly I’m just really not a big fan of mayo, it can makes me feel bloated and aside from that imagine the chunk of calories the dressing itself contains!! Haha i am simply a calculative person on this matter. And other than the excessive dressing I’d have to say the dune amounts of shredded chicken balance out the dish. And their use of a thin layer of wheat bread at the bottom justify the fact that it is not as heavy as it looks.
Well then what are you waiting for!! Hurry pay the cafe a visit xP it sure will worth every single dime spent, at the same time adding more entry to your Cafe experiences in town! (:

CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVA |Oasis
A masterpiece released in the 96, the year I was born. 17 year-old but never gets old in the ear. This song has aroused such huge controversy for it’s obscure meaning ever since its release. Where as a matter of fact writer/guitarist Noel Gallagher has never confirmed what message the song is actually trying to reach out to the listeners. “I don’t fu**ing know. But are you telling me, when you’ve got 60,000 people singing it, they don’t know what it means? It means something different to every one of them.” Noel’s response when he was asked regarding the meaning of a particular line of the song.
Well In this case, I guess a song may not always be written out of a valid purpose nor from a certain belief to turn it into something significant. The meaning of this killer song is just left for each soul to interpret from different angle perspectives, with variety kind of emotions, or even at any particular circumstances. Please enjoy!
Dedicating this to you Boo.
How many special people change? How many lives are living strange? Where were you while we were getting high?
